Norwegian Contractors (NC) recently completed the production of Shell's gravity-base structure and the concrete hull of Conoco's tension-leg platform by incorporating the use of titanium pipe for firewater protection systems on platforms which are used for the recovery of oil and gas from offshore sites. The use of titanium was specified for use in piping systems which would be inaccessible after installation to eliminate the need for inspection and repair over the projected lifetime of the platforms. Titanium was chosen because of its strength, its exceptional corrosion resistance in a seawater environment, and because it was expected to last the lifetime of the platforms. It also required less maintenance than materials such as copper-nickel or 6 moly (super austenitic stainless steel) which had been used for similar piping applications in the past. Find out how NC successfully used AMI's orbital welding equipment in this platform production project. Click here for full article... troll.doc |
