The recent development of standards and guidelines such as the ASME Bioprocessing Equipment Standard BPE-2002 are both a response and a driving force for quality in pharmaceutical piping systems. This article describes a recent piping installation at Sicor, Inc. (formerly Gensia Sicor Pharmaceuticals), Irvine, California. The article was authored by Dr. Barbara Henon of Arc Machines, Inc. in cooperation with co-authors Stephan Muehlberger, Senior Manager Project and Process Engineer at Sicor, Inc. and Gene DePierro, President of the installing contractor Pro-Tech Process, Inc. The article details the preparation, standards, SOP's, installation and extensive documentation involved in the installation of a modern pharmaceutical process piping system.
